It's okay to suck at marketing
It's okay to suck at marketing.
How do I know?
Because I suck at marketing.
Here at Simplero, we do pretty much zero of what people would normally call marketing.
No paid ads. No content marketing to note. No organic social. Sure, we have an affiliate program, but no one's been in charge of it for years.
And yet, we've managed to create a $4M/year recurring revenue business.
Not too shabby.
How?
By focusing on a great product and great customer service.
Word of mouth takes care of the r…
Small actions matter way more than you think
It's easy to tell ourselves "arhh, this little thing doesn't matter."
I'll just cut a corner here.
One bite of dessert can't hurt.
One drink.
One commitment I don't hold.
But they do.
For several reasons.
One, because each little action adds up over time.
How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.
How do you lose 100 pounds? One-tenth of a pound at a time.
Two, because they train your mind.
Each time you honor your commitment to yourself, live your values, stick with the plan, on…
When to trust your gut
Question: When should you trust your gut?
Answer: Every time.
Last week I spent some time working with Jay on my personal brand. We've been creating great content, but follower growth has been slow.
And then we had a breakthrough. We found a strategy to help us grow, acquiring real, relevant followers, through shoutouts. And since then, we've grown from 1700 to almost 9500 followers in just a week.
Retracing my steps, this happened because I said yes to several things in a row.
First, I sai…
Why it's GREAT to find out you're wrong
This is something I've been thinking about a lot:
Most of us HATE that feeling of being wrong.
Our ego hates it.
That sinking feeling in the gut.
But the more you learn to LOVE that feeling, the better.
You're ALWAYS wrong. In a million little ways.
The faster you identify where the faster you find the bug in your thinking, the better everything becomes.
Because your thoughts and beliefs dictate your perceptions, your actions, and your results.
So start loving being wrong.
What do you…
Possibilities
There are always alternatives. There are always options.
I like to remind myself that I'm wrong in a million big and small ways, and the faster I identify and fix those false beliefs, the better my life gets.
This week has blown up some of my beliefs around the potential of my businesses, and what's possible in terms of sheer financial possibility.
The potential out there really is quite limitless.
It's up to you and what you want
... what you're willing to put in
... what you're willing t…
Who do you need to become?
As you grow your business, you will have to grow as well.
If you're just starting out with your business, that person who has made their first $10k online is not the same person you are today.
As you grow, the person who has a $50k/year business is not the same person that just hit the $10k milestone.
And on and on it goes.
For every stage of growth, there are steps you have to take.
And then there's the person you have to become.
For me, I've always been a doer. An overachiever.
I'm lear…
Future and present
As a business owner and a human, we need to set goals.
Okay, let me rephrase that.
We don't need to set goals. But goals can be a super useful tool.
When we know exactly where we're going, it's a lot more likely we'll get there.
The challenge with goals—especially goals that are deeply emotionally meaningful to us—is that it can trigger our very human tendency to reject the present.
You set a growth goal for your business, and now you feel bad about the fact that you're not there yet.
You …
What does success look like?
Before I get into this week's topic, I just want to quickly share with you the questions from last week's AMA:

Now back to talking about success...
One of my favorite questions when I'm coaching customers or community members or team members is
What does success look like?
What are we really trying to achieve here?
What's the outcome we want?
…Are you successful?
For the longest time, I hated the word "success".
It felt like it was more an indictment.
A judgment.
Are you successful?
Are you good enough?
Are you worthy of being here?
And I always felt like I didn't measure up.
Didn't make the cut.
But then about ten years ago, someone helped me see the word "success" in a completely different light.
Not as a judgment of me, as a person.
But as a matter-of-fact statement about results out there.
Success is simply about whether you achieved what …
Who's the most important hire?
At the AMA (Ask Me Anything) call, Jacob asked me who's the most important hire in the company.
My answer?
It depends.
If you're starting out, and you need to grow revenue, I'd want to hire a marketer.
The most experienced marketer you can afford. A good marketer will (obviously) pay for themselves many times over.
That's the point.
For where I'm at, my most critical hire is an Integrator.
If you don't know what that is, check out the book Rocket Fuel by Gino Wickman.
Chances are you're …
