Business as philanthropy

Most people have an understanding of business that it’s about profits, or perhaps shareholder value.

To me, that’s such a limited worldview to come from.

The only thing that matters, in the end, is love. It's the relationships we're able to build through life. Starting with the relationship with ourselves, and flowing outwards from there.

Nothing else truly matters.

If you don’t have integrity, you have nothing.

If you don’t have love, you have nothing.

There are people who will go make a lot of money doing something that’s either meaningless or downright shady, and then they’ll “give back” through some sort of charity.

I find that backward.

I spoke with someone who’d built a very successful business selling custom print wallpaper. I asked him what his life purpose was. His answer? “Definitely not wallpaper!”

To me, the only way that it makes sense for me to do business is if the business is my philanthropy. It is the way that I contribute to the world. It is the direct expression of my life purpose and what I was put on this planet to share with others.

If not that, why are we wasting our time?

I get that not everybody sees it this way, but it’s the only way that makes sense to me.

That’s why I created Simplero, and why I’m still doing Simplero.

To create a platform for people to step into their life purpose.

To share their gift with their tribe.

And to ultimately, together, help raise the next generation of leaders and members of society who will help make this world better for the humans that live in it.

Business is an act of generosity.

We step up to the plate and find the courage to share our gift with the world.

That’s why I titled my book Show Up and Serve.

Because that’s what we do each day.

We show up.

And we serve.

With love,
–Calvin
