Segments & billing.
A message longer than 160 characters — or 70 characters if special characters are used — is broken into multiple text message segments. Each segment is billed separately: if a text is broken into 3 segments, you're billed for 3 SMS.
How a message splits into segments can also depend on the country and carrier.
SMS billing happens at the end of your billing cycle, for the total of all segments sent. Rates are listed above.
Administrator notifications about new purchases don't count toward your text message usage.
Everyday letters & symbols
Most letters, numbers, punctuation, and basic symbols. The efficient encoding — you get the most characters per segment.
Emojis, accents & other scripts
Any of these switch the whole message to UCS-2, which uses more space: emojis (😊 🎉), accented letters (é ñ ø ł), special symbols (€ —), or non-Latin scripts (中文 عربي).
Tip: keeping messages to standard characters — and under 160 characters — is the most cost-effective way to send.
